Quantum Day is the first in a series of quantum-focused events produced by New Lab exploring topics such as quantum computing, quantum materials, & quantum biology. Our first event, in partnership with the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), & sponsored by IBM, features a day of activities & programming focused on quantum technology & its potential impact on a variety of industries.

SESSION 1: A Quantum Computing Lab Model 9:30am - 12:00pm

The Waterloo Quantum Ecosystem -Raymond Laflamme, Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis John von Neumann Chair, Quantum Information Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo

An IQC Start-Up Success Story - Joseph Emerson, CEO, Founder & Chief Scientist, Quantum Benchmark Professor, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo

SESSION 2: Quantum 101 12:30pm - 2:00pm
An introduction to quantum technologies & their current & potential applications withJohn Donohue - Manager, Scientific Outreach, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo
SESSION 3: QUANTUM + Pop Culture 6:30pm - 7:30pm, followed by a networking reception
In pop culture, quantum physics has become, like rocket science, shorthand for frighteningly complicated science. It has taken on an almost magical connotation in fiction-with features like entanglement, superposition, & tunneling spurring imagination-but where does the science draw the line?
JoinJohn Donohue,Manager, Scientific Outreach, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterlooin examining quantum in film, TV, games, & literature, considering how it connects to modern quantum technologies & removing the mystery while maintaining the magic surrounding quantum mechanics.
