Graphs & Fault Localization: A Case of "Unreasonable Effectiveness''

Graph theory & Network Science are well understood areas of pure mathematics & complex systems analysis. Perhaps less well appreciated is their extreme utility in the practical area of IT Operations. In this talk I will briefly overview the use case of IT Operations, provide a quick survey of useful concepts in graph theory & then describe & contrast two applications to the area of fault localization. The first is a somewhat legacy application of legacy systems, the second an application of the more novel concept of vertex entropy, a concept arising from the information theoretic treatment of graphs. What I hope will be apparent is the Unreasonable Effectiveness of graphs in network science, with apologies to Eugene Wigner.
