Joanna Kao

Abstract: This talk will cover translating complicated graphics from financial reports into stories that can be consumed by anyone, designing for different mediums so content can be delivered straight to where our readers already are & factors to consider when creating accessible graphics.

Bio: Joanna S. Kao is a visual journalist at the Financial Times & teaches courses on accessibility & data visualization at the New School. She creates immersive long form story templates, experiments with audio storytelling & explores theater-related data in her spare time. She has a bachelors degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology & enjoys living at the intersection of computer science, design & journalism.

Julie Rodriquez

Abstract: Data visualizations are often compromised representations that may limit our ability to understand the full story or lead us to shortsighted conclusions. Between multiple screen displays, tables of data, & basic charts that only show a limited perspective of the data, we are left with subpar tools to combine & analyze data. Collectively, we know we need to improve our data experiences, as well as our ability to see the main issues, discover the hidden details, make connections, & compare the top ideas. And increasing amounts of data only heighten the need to do more with the data we have & ensure our decisions are well considered. As a result, we also need better methods to navigate data & extract multiple questions from datasets so that our follow up queries are only a click away.

Bio: Julie Rodriguez is vice president of product management & user experience at Eagle Investment Systems. An experience designer focusing on user research, analysis, & design for complex systems, Julie has patented her work in data visualizations for MATLAB & publishes industry articles on user experience & data analysis & visualization. She is the coauthor of Visualizing Financial Data, a book about visualization techniques & design principles that includes over 250 visuals depicting quantitative data.
