The USF community is invited to join USF President, Paul J. Fitzgerald, & the NYC Alumni Regional Chapter at the Yale Club in New York City for a networking reception & an engaging panel discussion featuring an insightful conversation on the vital role of public service in navigating the complexities of our current political landscape.

This conversation will delve into critical topics such as the value of serving in elected office, strategies for effective civic engagement under difficult conditions, & approaches to fostering positive change in our rapidly evolving societal landscape. Our distinguished panel of speakers will provide invaluable insights & actionable advice on how individuals can make meaningful contributions to the public good, even in the face of complex challenges.

Registration is $15 & includes beer, wine, & heavy appetizers during the reception.

DERICK BROWN is the senior director for the Leo T. McCarthy Center at the University of San Francisco. A native San Franciscan who brings more than 20 years of experience leading neighborhood engagement strategies & addressing complex community issues. Brown most recently worked as a senior community engagement advisor for the San Francisco Police Department. Previously, Brown was the director of neighborhood services & senior advisor for the Office of the San Francisco Mayor, serving under Mayors Ed Lee, London Breed, & Mark Farrell as their primary community engagement strategist. Brown is committed to continuing & enhancing the tradition of inspiring USF students to serve others & pursue successful careers in public service.

JANESSA GOLDBECK, MAPL '23, is the CEO of Vet Voice Foundation, a national nonprofit that advocates for veterans & military families to actively participate in our democracy. As a U.S. Marine Corps combat engineer officer, she led overseas missions & supported service members as a uniformed victim advocate. Goldbeck's activism includes challenging the Combat Exclusion policy, contributing to its repeal & allowing all qualified applicants, regardless of gender, to serve in all military roles. Her pre-military career involved human rights advocacy, leading efforts to protect civilians in conflict zones. Goldbeck holds degrees from Northwestern University & the University of San Francisco & serves on numerous boards emphasizing security, equality, & community engagement.



THE HONORABLE PATRICK J. MURPHY, the 32nd Under Secretary of the Army (2015-2017), managed the Army's $148 billion budget, emphasizing innovation & efficiency. He spearheaded the Soldier for Life initiative & secured notable public-private partnerships, leading to significant savings & an 18% increase in social media engagement for Army promotion.

A veteran of the Iraq War, Murphy was the first to serve in Congress from this conflict, contributing to critical veterans' legislation. His diverse career includes roles as a television executive, co-founder of a content production company, & a national security policy show host. He earned a Bronze Star for his service in Bosnia & Iraq.

Educated at King's College & Widener University School of Law, Murphy also lectured at leading universities & served in significant legal & advisory roles within the military, showcasing a lifelong commitment to public service & national security.

ALEX OTHMER, MAPL '24, is the CEO & Co-founder of Guardian Revival, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered to revive & preserve the mental health & well-being of veterans & first responders. Othmer has a master's in psychology from Penn State University & a master's in public leadership from the University of San Francisco. He attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy & served as a Navy SEAL for over eight years. Othmer has traveled the world with experience in Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, Africa, & South America.
