Metis & Dataiku join to host two talks on user-focused data science & building a more comprehensive view of what individuals really want.

In this talk, Harlan Harris, Director of Data Science at WayUp, discusses how constraints from the business model & site design are reflected in the design of WayUp's job recommendations system. He will then dive into one sub-component of the system -- the algorithms used to identify job listings that are similar to listings that a user previously interacted with. On text such as job listings, naive similarity approaches can be problematic, & lead to poor recommendations. Instead, they use historical data & a custom similarity function to identify listings that returning users will find most compelling.

Harlan D. Harris has a PhD in Computer Science/Machine Learning from the University of Illinois, & worked as a Cognitive Psychology researcher before turning to industry. He is currently Director of Data Science at WayUp, & has previously worked at Kaplan Test Prep, The Advisory Board Company, & several startups. Harlan co-founded the Data Science DC Meetup & Data Community DC, & co-wrote Analyzing the Analyzers, a short O'Reilly book about the variety of data scientists.
