Ransomware is wreaking havoc on our society, & costing billions of dollars. This presentation will describe a novel approach for fighting against a problem that is growing ever worse as the demand for reliable data storage grows. The technique captures statistics about incoming data, & feeds this data into an AI-trained model in real time. A key aspect of its success is that it operates as part of the firmware that manages the flash memory-based storage system itself.

This talk will describe how this approach to this sticky problem has been successfully deployed in large production systems. Included will be a discussion of how the results coming back are also able to improve the model over time, how this allows for detecting corruption very early, & so is able to significantly reduce the time to recover.

Andy Walls recently retired as Chief Architect & CTO for IBM's Flash Systems. He was also an IBM Fellow, IBM's most prestigious Honor. Andy worked for IBM for 43 years, & he now is a data storage consultant. He is a pioneer in enabling flash in the enterprise, & he has shaped the IBM storage portfolio to be highly differentiated & popular.

Andy was responsible for IBM's acquisition of Texas Memory Systems, & he defined & shaped the IBM FlashCore Module which is at the heart of its FlashSystem product line. He led & continues to consult on the architecture & definition of the entire FlashSystems NVMe product portfolio. Known as an innovator, he has applied for or filed over 150 patents.
