DUMBO has long been home to individuals & companies with equal parts creativity & business acumen. Each month, we'll be shining a spotlight on the vanguard, cutting edge companies & people who call DUMBO their home. During a brief moderated discussion, industry leaders in storytelling, media, & tech will share their philosophy around innovation: what it means for their company, & how to approach innovation in business as well as in life.

FEBRUARY SPOTLIGHT:
The RLab, 16,500 square feet of co-working labs, classrooms, studios, & more, is the nation's first city-funded center for research, entrepreneurship & education in virtual & augmented-reality, spatial computing & other emerging media technologies. NYCEDC & the Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment selected NYU Tandon School of Engineering as the administering institution & a consortium of participating universities, including Columbia University, CUNY, & The New School to manage & operate the space, along with a workforce development center at CUNY Lehman College in the Bronx. The new multi-university center is critical to the City's plans to establish New York City as the next global leader in VR/AR & related technologies & will create hundreds of new jobs in the field.
Justin Hendrix is Executive Director of NYC Media Lab, a public-private partnership between the City's industry & its universities to drive emerging media & technology innovation & entrepreneurship, & the founding Executive Director of RLab, a new 16,500 square foot facility including co-working labs, classrooms, studios, & more in the Brooklyn Navy Yard that is New York's City's home for VR, AR & spatial computing. RLab is the nation's first city-funded center for research, entrepreneurship & education in virtual & augmented-reality, spatial computing & other emerging media technologies. Previously he was Vice President, Business Development & Innovation for The Economist. He holds a BA from the College of William & Mary & an MSc in Technology Commercialization from the McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin. Follow him on Twitter @justinhendrix.
