Alberto Cairo's talk at the Demystifying Data Science Conference this year was one of the most popular sessions, so we've invited him back for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) where he'll answer your questions live!

We've all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words", that visualizations should simplify information & that they are powerful because they are intuitive & easy to read, but what if all those statements are myths? This AMA will focus on why visualizations are so often misinterpreted, & on how to become better readers & designers of charts, graphs, & maps.

Alberto Cairo began his career in journalism & visualization in 1997, & has been a head of infographics & multimedia at media organizations in Spain (El Mundo online) & Brazil (Editora Globo). He is now the Knight Chair in visual journalism at the University of Miami, & also director of visualization at UM's Center for Computational Science. He is also a freelancer, trainer, & consultant for organizations & institutions such as Google News Initiative & the Congressional Budget Office. He is the author of the books 'How Charts Lie: Getting Smarter about Visual Information' (W.W. Norton, to be published in October 2019), 'The Truthful Art: Data, Charts, & Maps for Communication (2016), & 'The Functional Art: an Introduction to Information Graphics & Visualization (2013). His website is www.albertocairo.com, his weblog is www.thefunctionalart.com, & his Twitter handle is @Alberto Cairo
