EVENT DETAILS |
Come meet Sludge, a new journalism project focused on money in politics.
Sludge is part of the First Fleet of newsrooms on Civil, a new blockchain-based publishing platform. Civil is building a marketplace & a new cryptocurrency to support local, independent, & policy journalism.
Three of Sludge's five team members are based out of Civic Hall: co-founder David Moore; & reporters Jay Cassano & Alex Kotch, part of the award-winning team of investigative journalists at International Business Times. In this lunch, Jay & Alex will present the latest in investigative journalism techniques, focusing on lobbying research & covering special interest influence. They'll outline their research methods & data-driven reporting practices. David will demo the new Civil publishing platform, which is open to new publishers, & walk through how readers will interact with the optional crypto-currency features & governance on the network.
Independent & local journalism is increasingly important for a healthy media diet in the U.S. representative democracy, with social media platform centralization & filter-bubble news landscape. But traditional revenue sources for local news publishers - advertisements & city-newspaper subscriptions - have unfortunately been dwindling. Civil is designed to support a sustainable marketplace for independent journalism & a diverse community of newsmakers.
