Andrea Powell
Optimizing your mental health
As technologists, we are experts at solving complex problems. As humans, we struggle to understand & take care of our bodies. There are ways to take the professional methodologies we have crafted as developers & designers in the workplace, & turn them inward to tackle some of the most challenging mental & physical problems we face. Here is an example of a framework that has worked for me, & tips for customizing it to work for you.

Manisha Verma
Monitoring system alerts with machine learning
To date, most failure monitoring systems rely on manually curated list of rules to group signals such as alerts into situations/incidents that an engineer needs to inspect or resolve. We show that machine learning can be reliably used to predict the complexity of an alert & can further assign the alert to the correct tier with a high accuracy. We show how we can use several text & time-series related attributes for alert intensity & tier prediction.

Bethanne Zink
Employing Property-Based Testing in Your Automated Unit Tests
This talk will outline the limits of example-based testing & describe how property-based testing is a supplemental approach that addresses those limitations. I will define the benefits of property-based testing, discuss what types of properties to test for, & list the libraries & tools that exist to employ property-based testing in different programming languages. I'll also provide examples of property-based tests Ive built to enhance our test coverage at Kindur.

Yin Mei
Security for Everyone
A short presentation about methods which improve ones everyday digital habits in order to elevate security for everyone, designed around a foundational threat model shared by most individuals using the browser over various devices to surf the Internet in todays digital landscape. Discusses how our habits can affect vulnerable systems & introduces the Internet, Network protocols, HTTP vs HTTPS everywhere, why Google Chrome Incognito mode does not offer total privacy & why it matters, the pros & cons of VPNs plus a Wireshark demo, why cafe Internet is not always to be trusted, pros & cons of TOR & deep analysis of various end-to-end encrypted messaging tools.

Jamaica Fredericks
Browser Music! Getting Started with the Web Audio API
Have you wanted to add sound to your app? Did you know that you can build a musical instrument in the console? Using the Web Audio API, developers can play audio files, create sounds, & even incorporate complex audio effects. This talk will provide a high-level introduction to the possibilities the Web Audio API provides, & will conclude with resources, including tutorials, libraries, & NYC-based community groups, for further music-coding exploration.
