Rules of Design for Developers
Lasse Koskela, VP Engineering @ Reaktor

This talk aims to save those unlucky teams who are struggling with little to no access to professional designers by presenting the (tongue-in-cheek) Rules of Design for Developers! They are rules of thumb that most often lead to a pretty good outcome, helping us create decent looking UI even when the designer isn't around to give feedback. The rules cover a wide variety of design aesthetics & accessibility-related issues related to color, contrast, shadows, line widths, overlaying text on top of images, text styling, font selection, font size, & layout, featuring examples both good & bad.

Lasse Koskela has consulted, trained & made apps for organisations in technology, media & edutech industries, spanning three continents & 17 years. Today Lasse enjoys doing that from Reaktor's NYC office. He is determined to not write a third technology book, stubbornly attempts to learn new things, & jumps at a good excuse to visit one of our international offices.

Easier Asynchronous Programming with Promises
Ben Allison, Sr. Director of Mobile @ iHeartRadio

A look at Promise libraries for Objective-C & Swift. Promises are well-known to Javascript developers, but not to iOS developers. They offer a number of advantages over traditional completion blocks, including completion chaining, standardized queue/thread behavior & task cancelation. A look at a promise library, https://github.com/benski/BAPromise that I wrote for my own apps, & its advantages over PromiseKit & Bolts. Ben Allison oversees iOS development at iHeartRadio & its suite of Cocoa Application (iOS, macOS, tvOS). A long-time Windows application developer, he was lead developer for Nullsoft Winamp for 8 years before making the switch to iOS development in 2013. He previously worked on Spotify's video podcast feature, & led iOS development at HBO (HBO GO, MAX GO).
