We're seeking a new member for our collegial & nimble team of fact-checkers to help in the production of our biweekly, award-winning magazine. Fact-checkers at New York Magazine play an integral role in the creation & vetting of the magazine by working closely with editors & reporters to ensure the quality, accuracy, & fairness of stories in the magazine; they also work on digital enterprise features & reporting for New York Media's suite of sites. Although this is not a writing position, staff fact-checkers have ample opportunity to contribute writing & reporting to the magazine & online.

WHAT YOULL DO
-
Ensure the quality of the print magazine & New York Media's suite of websites through rigorous fact-checking, including, but not limited to, interviewing all principal sources, contacting experts to corroborate information & to evaluate the framing of material, & independently researching & verifying all factual claims in assigned stories.

Communicate changes clearly & collaboratively to editors, writers, & copy-editors through all stages of production.

Assist in reporting & research for the print magazine in conjunction with the writers & editors.

Work closely with the magazines attorneys, in conjunction with the research director & editors, to identify & mitigate potential legal claims.

Other responsibilities as assigned by manager or supervisor.
WHO YOU ARE
-
1-2 years of professional reporting or fact-checking experience required

Bachelors degree required
-
Ability to work independently & as part of a larger team
-
Ability to work collaboratively with editors & to communicate changes clearly & effectively, but with grace & humility

Ability to effectively juggle multiple deadlines

Detail-driven with a sharp eye for mistakes

Strong understanding & affinity for the editorial sensibility of New York

Previous experience fact-checking stories of feature length is strongly desired, but not essential for candidates who have a commensurate amount of reporting experience

Fluency in a second language is preferred, but not essential

This job is flex. This person should be located in New York & will be required to be in-office 3 - 5 days per week.
