Intelligencers Deputy Editor will play a central role in shaping & running New Yorks news & politics coverage. The job involves guiding ambitious enterprise reporting as well as sharp, engaging daily stories & live coverage. We are looking for someone with strong news judgment, a feel for Intelligencers voice, & the ability to generate & refine high-quality story ideas. The Deputy Editor will work closely with the Intelligencer editor & newsroom leadership to maintain the quality & ambition of the section & to help steer coverage through both major news moments & longer-term projects.

WHAT YOULL DO
- Help define & drive the editorial vision for Intelligencer, with a focus on news & politics & an eye on business, tech, media, & other core areas of coverage.
- Shape a mix of short, medium, & long-form journalism, including breaking-news responses, analysis, features, & enterprise stories.
- Oversee the day-to-day workflow of the team by assigning stories, editing drafts, & ensuring timely publication.
- Manage & mentor writers & editors, offering guidance on reporting, structure, & story development.
- Bring in new contributors & maintain strong relationships with freelancers & potential hires.
- Work with art, audience, audio, & social teams to develop packages & support multimedia storytelling.
- Help set priorities & make quick editorial decisions during high-intensity news cycles.
- Uphold standards of clarity, accuracy, fairness, & Intelligencers distinct voice.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in workflow, strategy, & coverage as the news environment evolves.
WHO YOU ARE
- At least six years of experience doing journalistic work that overlaps with Intelligencers aims, including significant time spent as an assigning editor.
- A strong record of publishing high-quality reporting, smart commentary, & timely news coverage.
- An ability to meet deadlines & comfort working within the 24/7 news cycle.
- Proven skill as an editor, with experience editing features, guiding reporting projects, managing daily coverage, & writing or refining headlines.
- A history of productive collaboration with writers, editors, & cross-functional teams.
- A steady supply of ideas for everything from quick-turn news posts to ambitious enterprise pieces & multimedia storytelling.
- The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, & operate confidently within a fast-paced news cycle.
- Clear communication & strong organizational skills.
- Familiarity with Intelligencers sensibility & an interest in helping shape its future.
