The Role

BuzzFeed is looking for an experienced & detail-oriented Director of Accounting to join our team based in our New York office. This is a full-time, hybrid position, with the expectation of commuting to our New York City office at least twice a week. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a multi-entity global environment and exceptional analytic, management, communication, & technology skills. The role will report to the Assistant Controller.

Youll play a key role in driving accuracy, efficiency, & engagement across our global accounting organization, empowering your team to grow & fostering a culture of accountability & collaboration.

You Will

  • Lead & mentor the Global Operating Expense accounting teams, fostering collaboration & continuous improvements. 
  • Oversee the monthly & quarterly financial close process for Global Operating Expense functions while providing timely & accurate reporting including flux analyses to senior management.
  • Review & approve journal entries, reconciliations, & variance analysis.
  • Own capitalized software & oversee payroll accounting, including salaries, commissions, bonuses, & benefits.
  • Oversee end-to-end Procure-to-Pay process, including vendor onboarding & reviewing new vendor contracts, invoice processing, intercompany cash transfers, & payment execution.
  • Own fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, & asset tracking in accordance with company policy & accounting standards.
  • Enhance existing company procedures to align with best practices around Global Operating Expense procedures. Identify opportunities to streamline & increase efficiency & accuracy.
  • Communicate information & prepare reporting for management in a concise manner & work with individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Serve as an escalation point to resolve problems or inconsistencies, ensuring effective problem-solving with a continuous process-improvement mindset.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including IT to implement process & technology enhancements. 
  • Partner with FP&A, HR, & Legal on financial processes, tax implications, & compliance matters.
  • Collaborate with the SOX team to ensure controls are designed & operating effectively across all responsibilities. 
  • Coordinate auditor requests for quarterly reviews & year-end audits.
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, & maintaining strong employee relationships.

You Have

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or related field. CPA certification is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public company experience
  • Proven experience leading & developing teams, especially in a dynamic, fast paced global environment.
  • Must be proficient in Excel & have experience with Netsuite & Concur
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, & decision-making skills. Ability to think outside the box, comfortable with ambiguity & providing suggestions & guidance
  • Excellent organization skills & superior attention to detail including the ability to manipulate & interpret large amounts of data
  • Self-starter, independently motivated with a proactive approach & the ability to motivate & inspire others
  • Exceptional communication & interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
