As the Infrastructure Engineer, you will be a crucial member of our IT Infrastructure team, responsible for the seamless operation & evolution of our network & core systems. You will collaborate closely with various IT & business units to plan, implement, & maintain reliable & secure infrastructure that supports Vox Media's continued growth. Ideal candidates will possess a strong passion for both network engineering & systems administration, with a proven track record in project delivery & a proactive approach to problem-solving.
This position reports to the Manager, Infrastructure & InfoSec & is based in New York, NY, with occasional travel to other offices & events as needed.
WHAT YOULL DO
Network & Systems Infrastructure:
- Design, implement, & manage both networking & systems infrastructure solutions for Vox Media
- Troubleshoot network (wired & wireless), server, & application connectivity issues, providing timely & effective support to staff
- Analyze performance data & statistics for both network & systems, providing recommendations & roadmaps for optimization & growth
- Manage & maintain critical systems, including servers (physical & virtual), operating systems, & core applications
Systems Administration:
- Deploy, configure, & maintain Windows Server & Linux server environments
- Administer virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V) & manage virtual machine lifecycle
- Manage Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, & other core infrastructure services
- Implement & manage backup & recovery solutions for systems & configurations
- Monitor system performance, storage, & ensure high availability of critical services
- Manage user accounts, permissions, & access controls across multiple platforms
Network Management:
- Configure & maintain Juniper switches, Aruba APs, routing protocols, & fiber connectivity
- Manage network segmentation, VLANs, & traffic optimization
- Implement & maintain wireless infrastructure & guest access solutions
- Monitor network performance & capacity planning
Security & Automation:
- Define, document, & enforce security & system standards across both network & server environments
- Implement security policies, patches, & updates for both network devices & server systems
- Automate routine tasks using scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash) to improve efficiency & reduce errors
- Conduct regular security assessments & vulnerability management
General Responsibilities:
- Stay current with industry trends in both networking & systems administration, identifying & proposing new solution options
- Provide training, mentoring, & tier 3 support for employees on network & systems-related issues
- Create accurate & comprehensive diagrams & documentation for network topologies, traffic flows, & system configurations
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical infrastructure support
- Travel is required up to 10% of the time
WHO YOU ARE
Required Skills:
- Analytical Skills: Review complex network & system issues to improve operational effectiveness & identify root causes
- Attention to Detail: Create accurate & comprehensive diagrams & documentation for network topologies, traffic flows, & system configurations, ensuring seamless interoperability
- Project Management Skills: Demonstrated experience in managing projects from inception to completion, including planning, execution, & maintenance within both network & systems domains
- Networking Expertise: Strong knowledge of configuring & supporting network devices such as Juniper switches & Aruba APs, routing protocols, & fiber connectivity, with proficiency in Junos OS
- Systems Administration Expertise: Solid understanding of server operating systems (Windows Server, Linux), virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V), & core system services
- Automation Skills: Experience with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, & Bash for automation tasks
- Security Technologies: Experience with security procedures & policy management in both network (Juniper, Palo Alto, pfSense) & systems environments
- Problem-Solving: Proactive approach to identifying & resolving infrastructure challenges
Bonus points for:
- Configuration Management: Familiarity with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
- Cloud Platforms: Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), hybrid cloud environments, & cloud networking technologies
- Monitoring & Alerting: Knowledge of monitoring & alerting tools for both network & systems (PRTG, SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix)
- Containerization: Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other container technologies
- Database Administration: Basic MySQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL administration experience
- Network Security: Experience with firewalls, VPNs, & network access control systems
- SD-WAN Solutions: Experience with CATO appliances & SD-WAN technologies
