The Role

HuffPost is seeking a Senior Photo Editor, a highly skilled, experienced, & versatile photo editor who works as both a hands-on creator & facilitator of premium visual content across HuffPost. They will be responsible for maintaining high photographic standards across HuffPosts coverage, closely coordinating with story/editorial stakeholders across the newsroom, & acting as a central point of HuffPost photographic storytelling. Candidates should be adaptable, resourceful, & dynamic with an eye for captivating, evocative photography & a deep understanding of copyright. This is a full-time hybrid position, with the expectation of commuting to our New York City office twice a week at minimum.

You Will

  • Handle day to day tasks including photo editing, research, photo illustrations, story layout, external rights clearing & photo licensing with minimal supervisionMaintain high photographic standards across HuffPosts work through close collaboration & communication with departments, leading quarterly trainings & best practices
  • Assign freelance photographers to cover original HuffPost stories of varying tone & scope, handle payment/contract, & subsequent story layout & edits
  • Assist colleagues with rights-related photo usage questions
  • Develop photo concepts & art plans in concert with Head of Visuals
  • Evaluate photographer pitches, spot photo-driven projects, evaluate their brand fit & develop into original projects
  • Identify skill-growth opportunities: Animation, design/typography, video editing, motion graphics

You Have

  • 8+ years of experience as a photo editor, ideally in a news/media environment
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment re: ethics & editorial standards, & quickly source images & clear permissions in a breaking news situation
  • Extensive experience with & knowledge of copyright & fair use as it applies to news imagery
  • Excellent project, time management & photo research skills
  • A demonstrated understanding of visual storytelling across different types of reported stories
  • Solid grasp of current photography industry trends/landscape & knowledge of emerging/established photographers
  • Master proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, advanced level retouching, color correction & photo manipulation skills
  • Outstanding verbal & written communication skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Experience with lighting/original studio photography
