About the Role

We are looking for full-stack software engineers who are excited about empowering customers & internal users with capabilities to monitor & observe CockroachDB as part of our Observability team. The Observability team is responsible for the end to end flow of observability data from the infrastructure within CockroachDB that exhausts raw data to the analysis, aggregation, & consumption of that data through user-facing console applications, various APIs, Cloud infrastructure, & several other tools. Our work is critical in supporting troubleshooting journeys for our customers & colleagues.

You Will

• Contribute to the growth of the open source database, CockroachDB. You bring your expertise & commitment to excellence to help build a database that makes data easy for everyone.
• Enhance observability features on Cockroach Cloud, our fully managed CockroachDB offering.
• Develop in Go & React/TypeScript, but if you don't know them you'll learn while you're here.
• Work closely with other engineers & product managers across our cloud & database teams. 
• Help foster a collaborative culture & exchange knowledge with a highly experienced technical organization.
• Ensure that CockroachDB remains scalable, survivable, & consistent as we continue to grow as a company.

The Expectations

In the first month you will join your engineering team & start to learn about our production systems, software development workflow, & the architecture of CockroachDB & CockroachCloud. We believe that it's essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology, company, & our culture.

After 3 months you'll be a fully-fledged member of your team & comfortable contributing to CockroachDB. You will begin to determine the parts of our product that most interest you & work with your manager to focus your efforts on projects that align with your interests & our goals.

As our team grows you will have the opportunity to shape the direction of development for CockroachCloud & CockroachDB. We want our users to have a phenomenal experience using our product & you play a crucial role in making CockroachDB a joy to use. We also offer technical training & experienced mentorship to help you learn & grow.

You Have

• A passion for working on complex technical products
• Experience building modern web applications using programming languages like Go, C/C++, Java, JavaScript & Python.
• Comfort implementing graphical user interfaces using technologies like React.
• An understanding of system design, API design, & infrastructure such as Kubernetes,  AWS/GCP/Azure. 
• Exposure to topics such as distributed systems, data processing pipelines, infrastructure around metrics, logs, & traces, & cloud observability technologies.
• 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience building collaborative relationships with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of the code review process & partnering with your teammates on challenging problems.
• A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Namrata Kodali - Senior Manager, Engineering 

Namrata joined Cockroach Labs in 2020, & leads the Observability team. Previously, she spent several years at Yext in New York City, leading teams working on everything from their API & platform to billing & subscriptions. She was initially drawn to Cockroach Labs culture & people, & has developed a passion for working in Observability, helping make CockroachDB more understandable. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, climbing, biking, & hiking.  

Isaac Wong - SVP of Engineering

Isaac is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Cockroach Labs. He partners closely with teams to ensure we have a balanced culture that promotes quality & innovation in pursuit of our goals. Before joining Cockroach Labs Isaac was in life sciences for 16 years with Medidata Solutions where he had a front row seat on the exciting ride from a 30 person startup to more than 2000 people worldwide. But the lure of distributed, resilient, & consistent SQL databases, along with the amazing technology & culture at Cockroach Labs proved too much. When not working he likes to draw, play the piano, & search NYC for cannolis with his wife & kids.

The annual anticipated base salary range for U.S. candidates for this role is USD $165,000 to $225,000, plus commission if a sales role. We set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, & geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location.  Actual salaries may vary & fall outside of this range depending on factors such as a candidates qualifications, geographic location, skills, experience, & competencies. In addition, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, & recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. Salary is one component of the Cockroach Labs total rewards package, which includes stock options, health insurance, life & disability insurance, funds towards professional development resources, flexible PTO, paid holidays, & parental leave, to name a few! Salaries for candidates outside the U.S. will vary based on local compensation structures.
