This is a hybrid (online + in-person) workshop as part of Human + Tech Week as well as the ongoing "Breaking Out of Silos" design challenge series.
What if collective intelligence emerges not from smarter AI, but from better-designed interfaces that shape how humans coordinate, decide, & govern together?
As AI increasingly mediates attention, meaning, & decision-making, the weakest link is not intelligence but coordination. Fragmented realities, invisible AI influence, & weak consent & accountability at the interface level erode shared understanding & trust.
In response, may we treat collective intelligence as a design problem. Focusing on the interface layer where humans & AI interact, this work uses meta-layer coordination primitives that make AI participation visible, align actions with human intent, & support shared sensemaking. This session brings that approach into practice through a participatory design process, guiding attendees to apply these principles to real-world systems in media, education, & civic infrastructure.
Join Daveed - vice chair of the SF Bay Chapter of the Internet Society & builder of the first meta-layer application, Canopi - as he convenes designers, technologists, & civic builders exploring interface-level design as a foundation for collective intelligence in AI-shaped systems. Sheila Hassell Hughes of Human Energy will introduce their work on the Noosphere.
Light lunch will be provided (in-person).
This is both an online & in-person event. The ZOOM link will be sent out before the event.
This is event is co-sponsored by the Meta-Layer Initiative, the Meta-Layer working group of the Internet Society SF Bay chapter, the Nevada ISOC chapter, the PCI AI Noosphere action team, & Human Energy. For context, see https://themetalayer.org.
