We have another transit talk, this time with maps, from Jediah Katz & Marc Zitelli.
Thank you to NYU for hosting us.
Everybody attending must RSVP through the registration form at nyhackr. There is a charge for in-person & virtual tickets are free. Space is extremely limited & in-person registration closes at 3 PM the day of the talk.
About the Talk:
Subway Stories (subwaystories.nyc) is a data visualization & journalistic work that uses the MTA's open data to illustrate the transit patterns that animate New York City. Developed for the inaugural MTA Open Data Challenge, the project was honored as the Most Creative entry by the MTA & showcased at the New York Transit Museum.
Learn how we built a custom, highly-responsive map app; support blazing-fast queries to the MTA's largest open dataset; make complex data accessible to the public; & host the whole thing for free!*
*Well, we're paying for the domain name.
About Jediah & Marc:
Jediah Katz is a senior software engineer at Figma who has worked on prototyping tools, video features, & evaluating AI applications. Previously, he was a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, creating & teaching a course on operations research & constraint programming. His interest in transit was sparked by his upbringing in Yorkville, Manhattan, from years commuting to school on the 4/5/6 trains & living above Second Avenue Subway construction. He's also an avid CitiBiker.
Marc Zitelli is a data analyst who previously worked as a political consultant. He has worked on campaigns ranging from local to national in scale & he specialized in using data analysis to predict voting behavior. He is passionate about storytelling as a way to humanize data & make it more accessible. He enjoys learning new coding languages & spends his free time outside with his dog, Franklin.
The venue doors open at 6:30 PM America/New_York where we will continue enjoying pizza together (we encourage the virtual audience to have pizza as well). The talk, & livestream, begins at 7:00 PM America/New_York.
Remember, register at nyhackr.
