Data Through Design is pleased to announce the opening of Hidden in Plain Sight, a public exhibition of 9 data-driven, interdisciplinary art projects open March 11th through 19th. We invite you to join us for the opening reception on Friday, March 10th at Prime Produce in Manhattan starting at 6:00 pm. Please register here for a ticket.

DxD is a yearly data art exhibition featuring works that creatively analyze, interpret & interrogate data made available in NYC's Open Data Portal.

The theme for this year is Hidden in Plain Sight

The intention of most datasets is to tell a story about the collective: they are designed, collected, & analyzed with a question about the whole in mind, smoothing over individualities & compacting lived experiences into a singular tale of us. This year we feature work that explores the smaller stories & voices that are hidden by this wider narrative as told by big data. We invited artists to complicate data trends & commonly held narratives, search for missing people/places/things in data, investigate anomalies & outliers, & draw back the curtain on the invisible hands that shape data to expose, question & engage the perspective & motives behind data collection.

Exhibiting artists & projects include:

Kerrie O'Leary: N.Y. sea
Sarah Sachs, Becky Xu, & Sourabh Chakraborty: Hidden Layers | The Voices that Shape NYC Zoning
Katrin Bichler, Aurelie Barbier, Aron Cohen, & Julie McEldoon: A Matter of Air
Zeana Llamas, John Noonan, & Forest Eckhardt: Kindling
Living Interfaces Lab: Elizabeth Henaff with Sheila Atieno, Tori Coleman, Andrea Sanchez: Holobiont Urbanism 2022: Be(e)yond What Meets the Eye
Shirley Wu: wonder
Ambar Reyes: Los delivereros
Tara Lee Burns: Disappearing Data
Susan Steinfield: Where are we going?
Please also join us during the exhibition: the gallery will be open to the public from Saturday, March 11 through Sunday March 19 from noon to 7pm every day. We will also host an artist panel discussion on March 19th along with a few presentations by artists. Schedule to come.
