An UNMUTED Book Club: Islamic Exceptionalism
READING NOT REQUIRED - just be curious!
Next up: Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom, the 1944 book that argued central planning doesn't just fail on its own terms but sets a country sliding toward tyranny, no matter how decent the intentions behind it.
Hayek wrote it as a warning to his adopted Britain, watching wartime economic controls & the postwar appetite for planning & fearing they'd curdle into something far worse. The core claim is uncomfortable: that the road to authoritarianism is often paved by well-meaning reformers who want the state to steer the economy toward fairness, & that once you hand government that kind of control, individual freedom rarely survives the trip. It's a foundational text of modern libertarian & conservative thought, & it's the book people keep reaching for when they want to argue that good intentions & coercion aren't opposites.
Show up even if you only got through a chunk. We'll talk about planning versus markets, where Hayek looks prophetic, where he looks paranoid, & what an argument written against 1940s socialism has to say to a very different 2026. And we'll do a fun hypothetical case study.
