There are a ton of conversations that we have been having lately, that have come up from UNGA & NY Climate Week: AI & the third wave of philanthropy money, AI & it's affects on climate, & evaluations for AI systems (especially with x-risks!). Please join us in a walk around west side of Manhattan at sunset, stopping to hear from people doing work at this intersection, & using the time in between to talk to each other about what we just heard.
The format is simple: we walk, we stop three times for a speaker, & in between each stop we mix up who we're walking with.
We don't have our three speakers confirmed yet. Nominate someone you think should be heard, or put yourself forward - have a provocation that we should talk about? We're looking for people doing honest, grounded work, not polished pitches.
We're doing this outside because AI lives on our computers, & building for people means remembering what it feels like to be one.
Rain location is Pier 57, & also the start/end location to our walk.
Humanity in the Room brings together the people who build AI & the people who have lived experiences that know what tools are actually useful in their communities: engineers, AI safety researchers, nonprofit leaders, funders, & social entrepreneurs. We started as a meetup series in New York. Since then we've run eight events & grown to more than 2,000 members. We were co-founded by Angela Ng & Paulina Munoz.
Why we rebranded: We used to be AI for Good NYC. We changed the name for two reasons: "AI for Good" is also the name of the UN's ITU program, & we didn't want to be confused with it. We also outgrew: Our work now reaches beyond New York, & beyond community events, into education & consulting for organizations deciding how to use AI. The new name is a play on "human in the loop." Before AI goes into a clinic, a classroom, or a grant portfolio, someone has to be in the room asking who it serves & what happens when it's wrong. That's the conversation we host. Please join us in making this happen.
