AI ethicist, author, & professor Shannon Vallor will deliver the Anita & Antonio Gotto Lecture on Sunday, September 28, at 2 pm.
Professor Shannon Vallor serves as Director of the Centre for Technomoral Futures in the Edinburgh Futures Institute. She holds the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data & Artificial Intelligence in the University of Edinburgh's Department of Philosophy. Professor Vallor joined the Futures Institute in 2020 following a career in the United States as a leader in the ethics of emerging technologies, including a post as a visiting AI Ethicist at Google from 2018-2020.
She is the author of Technology & the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting. Vallor serves as advisor to government & industry bodies on responsible AI & data ethics. She is also Principal Investigator & Co-Director (with Professor Ewa Luger) of the UKRI research programme BRAID (Bridging Responsible AI Divides), funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council.
Her research explores how emerging technologies shape-and are shaped by-human values, moral agency, & civic life.
Vallor's work has guided global conversations on the responsible design & governance of AI systems, & she is a sought-after advisor to academic, policy, & industry leaders around the world.
Vallor's latest book, The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking, explores the ethics, advantages, & challenges of a future with artificial intelligence.
