One of the most important jobs a Product Leader has is making sure everyone working on a product, at any time, clearly knows why they're spending their time (minute to minute, commit to commit) on a given piece of work.

In David's role at Next Big Sound, he experimented constantly with how to create the context for the team. As the direction of the company changed everyone wasn't just brought along for the ride, but was part of determining the course of action.

In this talk, David will recap the different approaches to creating the right context for a team, what's worked for him, what hasn't, & provide a few things Product Leaders can try right away to provide better context for their teams.

David Hoffman is a designer turned product leader. He co-founded Next Big Sound (acquired by Pandora in 2015). Right now he's taking the next year to travel & tinker with ideas.

Launched in 2009, Next Big Sound is the leading provider of online music analytics & insights. Used by thousands of individual bands & managers as well as the biggest labels & distributors in the world, Next Big Sound also powers the Social 50 & Next Big Sound branded charts for Billboard magazine.

In the spring of 2015, Next Big Sound was named the most innovative company in the music industry by Fast Company & Top 50 most innovative in the world. Next Big Sound was acquired by Pandora on July 1, 2015. Hoffman's role at Next Big Sound focused on driving the vision & execution around what was built & why. He spent his time at the intersection of three things he loves: music, data, & design.
