DETAILS

AI technology like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Midjourney & many others will play an increasingly large role in our day-to-day lives. To this end, New York AI Users will host our monthly tech talks & social gathering at Thoughtworks' private space in NoMad. We're very excited to host with Thoughtworks, a global tech consultancy. They will graciously provide free drinks & food for the event, & we're excited to take advantage of their top notch AV system for the talks. The space & accommodations will be perfect for our talks & the social that follows.

From the creators & organizers of New York Tech & Beer, New York AI Users organizes high-quality AI events that both educate & connect AI enthusiasts in the New York area who use or want to use AI to meet their creative, entrepreneurial, & technical aspirations. No technical background is required, only an interest in learning about these tools of the future. Founders, engineers, & creatives are all welcome!

For our December meeting, we will gather at Thoughtworks & we will host:

Talks on AI:
For our first talk, we will hear from Wei-Yin Ko. Wei-Yin will discuss unique challenges (and opportunities) of building multilingual LLMs & why this is important. He will delve into the model development of a multi-lingual LLM & the differences compared to LLMs in English. How do we evaluate & what do we get out of this as users of LLMs? Wei-Yin Ko is a Member of Technical Staff in the multilingual team at Cohere, where his main focus is developing the multilingual capabilities of Cohere's generative Large Language Models (i.e. Command). He is also one of the original core members of the Aya initiative, which is an ongoing open science project by Cohere For AI to build multilingual LLMs that serve a wide array of languages. Prior to Cohere, Wei-Yin worked primarily on computer vision across industries from healthcare to livestreaming.
For our second talk, we will hear from James Brusseau. James will talk about recommendation algorithms & how they are driven by artificial intelligence to provide what we want. These algorithms also capture us in our established preferences & consequently inhibit the discovery of new interests. Netflix constantly proposes similar films, LinkedIn job opportunities replicate past roles, Tinder repeatedly surfaces the same person, but with a different name. We are trapped inside of who we are. This confinement is a restriction on human freedom, harmful to social wellbeing, & diminishing to company profit. To respond, we will ask how recommendation algorithms can be reengineered to provoke new curiosities & interests that allow us to break away from our own past & our established identity. James Brusseau (PhD, Philosophy) is a professor in the Philosophy Department at Pace University in New York City during the fall & winter, & he is a professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Trento in Italy during the spring & summer. His academic research explores the human experience of artificial intelligence in the areas of personal identity, authenticity, & freedom.
After the talks, there will be social time with the attendees & the speakers for the remainder of the evening, with free drinks & food
We're excited to see you soon!

Note: There will be no refunds for cancellations within 48 hours of the event
