Civic Art Lab 2019 | Design, Social Impact, & Sustainability Talks
This series of short talks & a short workshop on circular economy & zero-waste practices brings together educators & practioners working at the intersection of design, social impact, & community activism.
Presenters:
Daniel Horn & Leonel Ponce, Operation Resilient Long Island (ORLI+)
ORLI+ discusses their Summer's Youth Climate Resilient Design & Planning class, conducted in collaboration with GreenspaceNYC & the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity's (RISE) 'Shore Corps' program. There, local high school students participated in an intensive 5-week course with the principal goal to re-connect the Far Rockaway community to its recent history of unimplemented & unbuilt proposals for Climate Adaptation & Resilience design, planning, development in the area.
Mark West, House of Mark West Gallery & Upcycle Junction Market
Creative Director for House of Mark West Gallery & Project Manager for the Upcycle Junction Market explores principles & hands-on skills, creating art & finding multiple uses in things that would have ended up in a landfill. This workshop & talk examines how NYC based artists & designers can reduce material costs, using creativity, & reducing NYC waste.
Tanika Williams, Union Theological Seminary
The Akan people have gifted us Sankofa--the understanding that to go forward one must first go back. A Song of Ascents is a secular sermon that traces several African-Jamaican liberation movements to learn how we can model collaboration with the environment, cultivate liberative economics, & create artful soul justice responses as protest & archive.
This series of talks is part of Civic Art Lab 2019 is the 5th iteration of our art, design, science & sustainability lab, held in the gallery & workshop space Chinatown Soup between October 11th & 13th, 2019. This year's lab brings together artists, designers, & educators from Columbia University, Queens College, Pratt, Royal College of Art, Perez Architecture, & other independent design & fine art studios. Workshops, events, & exhibitions lead investigations into diverse themes such as: climate change & climate resilience, creative re-use, urban agriculture, sustainable architecture, environmental justice, & more. This year's theme considers creative collaboration in a circular economy, zero-waste practices, & the future of sustainability & resilience.
Civic Art Lab is open to everybody. Tickets are free. Small donations are encouraged & help to keep the lab running each year.
Civic Art Lab is hosted by GreenspaceNYC (www.greenspacenyc.org), a non-profit collaborative that develops & curates free educational programming, hands-on workshops, & public design projects that encourage dialogue, enliven public spaces, & promote the future of more equitable & sustainable cities.
