The US power sector is entering a complex new phase driven by rapidly expanding electricity demand. While generation capacity is growing, the critical challenge is delivering clean, reliable, & affordable power to homes, businesses, & industry. This transformation is uniquely defined by surging electrification, the rise of AI & large data centers, the growth of distributed energy resources, & expanding heavy industry loads-creating unprecedented stress on the power grid.
America's goals for energy security, economic growth, & industrial competitiveness rely as much on grid modernization as they do on expanding generation. Grid capacity now often dictates where new generation projects & data centers are located, & how quickly electrification can scale across transportation, buildings, & manufacturing. If the grids are not strengthened faster, progress will slow down, costs will rise, congestion & reliability problems will increase, & economic opportunities could be lost.
Originally built for a different era, the US transmission & distribution networks are now operating near their limits, facing challenges including integration of renewables, bidirectional power flows, rising peak demand, declining system inertia, & increasing climate & cybersecurity risks. Grids must evolve from passive infrastructure into an intelligent, dynamic system that manages flexibility, resilience, & reliability in real time.
Meeting this moment requires urgent expansion & modernization of the power grids-a priority reinforced by the U.S. Department of Energy's Speed to Power initiative to accelerate critical grid infrastructure. With record investments underway, electricity grids must transform to support growing demand, manage emerging risks, & integrate varied generation resources more effectively.
However, grid transformation is complex, requiring close coordination among federal & state regulators, regional transmission organizations, utilities, technology providers, investors, & communities. No single policy, market mechanism, or technology can deliver this transition alone.
In this context, Global Transmission is organizing a conference on Grids in Transition - US on September 24, 2026, in New York City. This conference will place grids at the center of the conversation about the future of the US electricity industry, bringing together policymakers, regulators, system operators, utilities, technology leaders, & investors to examine how the grid must evolve to support the nation's rapidly changing power system.
Building on the success of our past grid & electrification events, this conference will provide a timely opportunity to discuss the challenges, trade-offs, & solutions needed for developing the electricity networks of the future. This event will offer vital insights & collaboration opportunities on the transformative role of grids in the American energy landscape.
