Title: Visualizing Machine Learning with D3

Description: Machine learning is everywhere. Whether or not you agree with the presence of this pervasive technology in our world, communication designers must leverage their unique skill set to communicate these difficult concepts to the general public. In her book Weapons of Math Destruction, Cathy ONeil states: "The math-powered applications powering the data economy were based on choices made by fallible human beings... Like gods, these mathematical models were opaque, their workings invisible to all but the highest priests in their domain: mathematicians & computer scientists. With these algorithms making decisions about our day to day lives, it is imperative that we all understand the implications of these powerful technologies. How can data visualizers leverage design concepts to illustrate these difficult concepts? In this talk, Ellie will discuss the design considerations & implications of communicating & visualizing machine learning through her thesis work on the #metoo movement.

Bio: Ellie Frymire graduated from Villanova University in 2013 with a bachelors degree in mathematics, when she began her career as an analytics consultant for Deloitte. After four years of seeing the truth in the data often misunderstood, she recognized the power of meaningful design & intentional presentation of data, & how it can shape understanding. This desire to tell the story of data brought her to Parsons School of Design, where she obtained her Masters of Science in Data Visualization. She currently works as a developer at Two-N, an award winning data visualization agency in New York.
