Leading Researchers, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary to Call for Risk-Reduction Measures at Upcoming NYU/Sloan Lecture
The latest in a series of open lectures on cybersecurity and privacy at the New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering will probe the inherent vulnerabilities that weaken the nation's cyber security systems and detail a series of comprehensive changes to boost the safety of vital information stores. Surviving on a Diet of Poisoned Fruit: Reducing the Risks of America's Cyber Dependencies will take place in Downtown Brooklyn on December 10, 2014.

Richard Danzig, Vice Chair of The RAND Corporation and a Fellow of the Center for a New American Security, will lead this exploration of the paradox of today's cybersecurity systems-namely, that despite our unprecedented communications capabilities, we also face unprecedented potential for exploitation and intrusion.

Danzig's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leading researchers on cyber warfare methods, including the Stuxnet worm--which attacked Iran's nuclear plants as well as Windows systems everywhere--and the brute-force Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that hackers use to shut down networks. They will discuss recommendations-technology, policy changes, economic, and business choices and more-that can lessen our vulnerability.

This conference is the fifth in a series of open lectures on cybersecurity and privacy sponsored by the NYU School of Engineering in alliance with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Prior lectures have drawn high-level representatives of New York's regional businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, academic institutions, media, and the public into discussions of strategies that address growing risks.
