DETAILS

Join us on Thursday, March 19th at our sponsor Materialize. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. to give attendees plenty of time to grab pizza & socialize, & the talk begin at 7:15 p.m. Following the success of the UnConf we've absorbed all of your feedback & a one off special!

Jon Bauman has been working on Rust & C++ Interoperability for several years & is one of the key figures in the space. He's flying in from Seattle especially for this talk.

Abstract: What is technology for & how do we do it well? Join me for stories & discussion about what I've learned working in all kinds of software & what I think we miss when we think that our jobs end at making the KPIs go up & to the right. I'll talk about my journey from nerdy kid obsessed with being technically correct (the best kind of correct) to nerdy adult obsessed with what knowledge even is & how we pass it along despite perfect communication being essentially impossible. Along the way, we'll get into why I think C++ is still so important, what I think is so great about Rust, & why I've put a huge amount of effort into bringing the two communities together. We'll talk about the technical challenges of interoperability & the social challenges of building robust consensus. Finally, we'll talk about what I've been up to lately, how life rarely goes the way we expect, & where I'd like to go from here. There will be a little code, some philosophy & a lot of jokes. Hopefully we'll all get to learn something new & see the world more complexly.

Bio: Jon Bauman has worked in tech for over two decades across various industries & programming disciplines. He is a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan, Etsy, Mozilla & the Rust Foundation. Jon brought his experience in Rust & standards development to bear as the implementer of AVIF support in Firefox & has been an active member of the WG21: the ISO C++ standardization committee, advocating for better interoperability & memory safety across all languages. Jon enjoys applying multidisciplinary skills to deeply understand complex systems & the perspectives of diverse stakeholders, forge pragmatic solutions, & build systems for the long term which benefit people.

Lawrence Harvey is Rust NYC's official recruitment partner, with Ross providing support as a co-organizer & financial support.

The space is generously sponsored by our partner Materialize.
