DETAILS

Test/Break is a monthly prototyping series by Columbia DSL. Join us as we delve into an array of projects in different stages of development. Test/Break offers a platform for creatives to explore groundbreaking forms & functions of storytelling. We focus on projects that push the boundaries of narrative possibilities, leveraging emerging tech like AI, AR, VR, & IoT as well as web-pervasive technologies. It's a unique opportunity for virtual creators, fostering collaboration & experimenting with participatory methods of interaction. After each prototyping session, we open the floor for engaging conversations that unveil the secrets of creative practice. Don't miss out on this exciting journey of innovation & storytelling!

We'll be testing/breaking two different projects.

Project #1
During this Test/Break session, we invite the audience into a micro-prototype of the Ghost Archives - an immersive & participatory experience that explores ancestral knowledge through ritual & technology. Through the integration of art & embodied technology we will trace & activate how rituals are used to bond living beings with ancestral & divine beings. It is both a view into the unseen as well as an orchestrated participation in symbolic gestures & states of being that reflect some ritual practices from within our cultural traditions.

Project Team
Susu Attar is a multimedia artist rooted in painting & in her experience as an Iraqi Angeleno. Both Susu's individual & communal practices explore themes including mourning, hospitality, healing & renewal. Her work across mediums often documents & reimagines struggles for self-determination, from the level of the individual to the family; from local communities to transnational diasporas. Through her wide-ranging & holistic approach, Susu examines existing frameworks within both everyday life & political movements & creates new contexts that center the notion of art as a means of transformation & a space of interconnection.

Magalis Videaux, Founder of the Imagination Lab, is a Black Cuban & Puerto Rican artist, designer, & maker whose work & social practice live at the intersection of experience design & immersive, participatory storytelling. She creates projects & cultivates spaces that harness story, design, & emerging media/technology as tools for critical play & social dreaming. In her artistic practice, Videaux embraces an interconnectivity between emerging technology & traditional knowledge, & generates creative research that explores & investigates new forms of digital storytelling, with a focus on XR driven experiences.

Project #2
The Last Human Haunted House is a multi-sensory, interactive horror installation that fuses physical & digital spaces, plunging audiences into the existential horror of an internet that no longer needs humans. Inspired by the Dead Internet Theory, this haunted house is not just a spectacle-it is a conceptual art piece about the death of organic reality, AI hallucination, & the erasure of human agency. Participants will navigate a liminal space where the boundaries between organic thought & algorithmic control blur, forcing them to question whether they are still in control-or merely ghosts haunting a world that has already forgotten them.
