Class in two sessions with an optional third session:
[optional] Python Boot Camp on Thursday, July 19 from 6pm - 9pm
Neurohacking 101 on Saturday, July 21st from 11am-5pm
Neurohacking 101 on Sunday, July 22nd from 11am-5pm
Did you know you can learn a lot about the brain from as little as a half hour in an MRI scanner? And that there are tens of thousands of brain scans publicly available on the internet? MRI has revolutionized the way we see the brain & mind, & it is advancing at an incredible speed. This introductory course covers some of the most important techniques used in the analysis of MRI data, & you'll learn plenty about neuroscience along the way!
In the first session, we'll start by going over some of the neuroscience fundamentals, & talk about how they apply to brain networks. You'll learn to use Python, a powerful general purpose open source programming language. You'll get an introduction to working with powerful Python packages, including Nilearn, Nibabel, & Scikit Learn. You'll pull brain data from servers, & analyze & visualize the brain networks in these open source data on your own laptop!
Day two, we'll learn about the major branches of machine learning & best practices in the field. You'll learn how to perform different kinds machine learning on many kinds of data, tricks to improve prediction accuracy, & then you'll see how to apply these machine learning techniques in MRI data too.
This is our third time offering this workshop at Genspace, & this time we've decided to include an optional Python Boot Camp.Python is an incredibly powerful & easy to learn all-purpose programming language. This short Python Boot Camp will be great for bringing your programming skills up to speed. Our goal is to give you exposure & training in the introductory Python skills you'll need to do everything we'll tackle in the Neurohacking 101 course. By the end of our training, you'll feel a lot more comfortable writing code & debugging it yourself, & will be even more prepared to tackle Python with MRI data! This optional boot camp is a great course for people who haven't programmed at all, or just never in Python. This would also be a great refresher course for people who already have a bit of experience but may feel rusty.

Aki Nikolaidis, PhD, is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for the Developing Brain at the Child Mind Institute. He uses machine learning techniquesto map out the development of the brain circuits critical for emergence of executive function & attention in children & adolescents. His work also focuses on understanding the neural correlates of intelligence, & more broadly, he is interested in understanding how patterns of large-scale brain plasticity drive the development of generalized higher cognitive skills. Aki received his BA in Psychology from Yale University & PhD in Neuroscience from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
