In the early days of software product management, PMs came in one or two pretty standard flavors: super technical PMs with computer science degrees (this was the majority), & some mix of marketers & consultants.
Today, PMs come from all walks of life. On my team today, there's a former UX engineer, a hard science Ph.D., & a serial founder. On my last team, there was an MBA, an MPH, & a woman who used to work at NASA. In fact, some of the strongest PMs with whom I've ever worked are ones who made mid-career transitions into the discipline.
Diversity of backgrounds is a superpower for any Product team. As their manager, it is your job to spotlight, amplify, & cultivate PMs' diverse strengths. As a leader in product management - whether you're an individual contributor or a people manager - you have the opportunity to empower PMs from diverse backgrounds to thrive in our field, thereby empowering our industry to solve a broader, more diverse range of problems.
