As the idea of solar geoengineering (also known as solar radiation modification or SRM) moves from the margins to the mainstream, the climate movement is facing a critical & often uncomfortable question: how should we engage with it? This gathering brings together diverse stakeholder perspectives actively considering new ideas & urgent solutions amidst escalating climate impacts.
Join us the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) & the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at 4:00 PM ET as we invite climate justice advocates, organizers, & environmental leaders into an honest, good-faith conversation about meaningful engagement with the accelerating consideration of SRM. Through two focused panels & a town hall-style discussion, we'll explore the complex dynamics shaping SRM conversations today, how civil society groups navigate these discussions, & how lived experiences of vulnerability & resilience influence perceptions of SRM's risks & promises. The session will deliberately address the varying salience of SRM across different advocacy perspectives & communities, recognizing that differing histories, resources, & immediate climate vulnerabilities profoundly shape how SRM is perceived & approached.
Together, we'll explore:
How different advocacy traditions are approaching SRM
How lived experiences & climate vulnerability shape perspectives
The role of precaution in a world already facing catastrophic climate harms
Whether actively tracking SRM or just beginning to consider its implications, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, share reflections, & explore what thoughtful, values-driven engagement could mean-particularly now, when decisions around SRM are increasingly urgent & consequential.
