DETAILS

MoMI invites you to an intimate convening featuring a conversation with special guests, including viral AI storyteller Ari Kuschnir, Founder of m ss ng p eces (other guests to be added); hands-on demos; & a reception with complimentary drinks & snacks. This is the first event leading up to the opening of MoMI LAB, a new space for emerging moving image technology at the Museum.

This event is organized by Gabo Arora, Program Director, MoMI LAB.

Propaganda has always advanced with the dominant technologies of its time. In the mid twentieth century, the tools of cinema were used to produce some of the most famous-and infamous-images of political & nationalistic persuasion, whether the ideologically motivated evil of Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will or the patriotic propaganda of Frank Capra's Why We Fight series. To varying ends, each used spectacle & editing to get their messages across loud & clear. Today, AI is replacing traditional film production as a tool for propaganda. Political leaders already use generative systems to fabricate images & films with a speed & polish once reserved for studio moviemaking. These new works create a new, unstable reality, testing the boundaries of belief & saturating the collective imagination.

During this event, panelists will present examples of propaganda & counter-narratives from contemporary artists who use the same tools to expose manipulation, reclaim cultural memory, & imagine alternative futures. Guests will have access to generative AI tools to create their own works.

MoMI LAB is a new initiative of Museum of the Moving Image & the first-ever free, accessible lab for AI & emerging technologies. Slated to open in Spring 2026, the Lab is building the future of culture & technology for all-a civic space where artists, educators, & communities can access cutting-edge tools, experiment freely, & debate how these technologies are shaping our world.
