Practice how to structure & formulate questions to get richer, more engaging responses from your interview subjects.
Conducting successful interviews is an essential part of almost any non-fiction storytellers' work: the stories you tell are only as good as the information you uncover. In this full-day course, you will learn & practice how to develop, structure, & formulate questions to get richer, more engaging responses from your interview subjects.
This course is designed for those working in podcasting, documentary film, or other strands of non-fiction storytelling/media who want to train their interview skills & master the art of interviewing. Here, you'll uncover how to research a subject, prepare the interviewee, & create structure for an effective interview. The foundation for this course is hands-on instruction, offering students the opportunity to hone & sharpen their techniques in a supporting, constructive environment.
The instructor for this day-long workshop is Iris Mansour, who has written & produced viral stories for Bustle, The Guardian, & Mashable, among others.
CURRICULUM PLAN:
The morning starts with a group exercise, followed by a conversation about the principals of interviewing.
In the afternoon, you will do several pair & group exercises to practice your interview skills. You will also examine how to prepare for an interview & create a rapport.
The day ends with a recap to share what you have learned & discuss any challenges you are currently experiencing in your own projects.

Iris Mansour has interviewed Presidents, Oscar winners, Dolly Parton impersonators & 10 year-old entrepreneurs for Fortune, Reuters TV, Mashable, Quartz, The Guardian & Time Out.
She started her career in the relentless field of TV News. Covering elections, hostage takings & everything in between. She learnt to interview virtually anyone about anything at a moment's notice, including: Hamid Karzai, Condoleezza Rice, Pedro Almodovar, & Monica Bellucci.
As she transitioned to features & documentaries, she came into contact with people who had never found themselves in the spotlight; young adults with cancer, teens with eating disorders & people experiencing homelessness. She needed to adapt her interviewing techniques to tell a very different kind of story.
Over the years, she's developed interview techniques that cover the most complicated scenarios. She's excited to share them with you.
