Join Anew and Anthem of us for a very special screening and discussion of the student-led movement to accurately teach our country's history.
Teaching America honors the high school students and teachers who join forces to stand up for African-American studies, after the state of Arkansas threatens to shut their classes down. The in-classroom testimony of a movement sparked by the unflinching desire to learn that crosses boundaries and generations in a time of intentional efforts to segregate and divide and to forcibly erase Americas history, culture, and humanity.
The film provides a lens and a point of intervention into the larger attacks on education and learning as a core chapter in the authoritarian playbook. There is a clear throughline between the efforts to limit and erase the teaching of history; the banning of books, curriculum and classes; the intentional push to segregate and divide; and the limitations being placed on free and open inquiry, expression, and teaching in K-12 and higher education.
The screening will start at 5:30pm, followed by a conversation.
