On October 12th, come join Molly Crabapple, Paris Marx, Alex Press, Ed Ongweso Jr., & Brian Merchant at the Starr Bar in Brooklyn as we put tech products & companies on trial.
We'll talk AI, Silicon Valley, labor power & Luddites in honor of the launch of Blood in the Machine. The main event will work like this: We bring an array of tech products-say, an Amazon Ring doorbell, generative art created by Midjourney, etc. We'll then subject each piece of tech to a discussion; does it accelerate exploitation? Is it unethically made? Does it benefit society?
Our tribunal will debate whether the harms outweigh the good, whether a piece of tech should be resisted-or destroyed altogether. The event will be open to the public, & all guests are encouraged to bring their own tech, to be subjected to the judgments of the tribunal.
The Luddites had a saying about the hammers they used to smash machinery, which were made by a blacksmith named Enoch who *also* built the machines that automated & degraded their work: "Enoch made them, Enoch shall break them."
So, I ordered a sledgehammer from Amazon for the purpose. "Amazon shipped them, Amazon shall shatter them."
It's going to be good fun. Starr Bar rules, so the booze will be flowing, & we're going to record the proceedings for a crossover episode of This Machine Kills & Tech Won't Save Us.
So come join us for a night of Luddites, solidarity with the humans in the struggle against the machines, & some good times with bad tech. It's open to all, & please do bring that special piece of tech in your life you'd like to see smashed to bits.
