ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
----

Have an idea for an app but don't know where to start? Feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure of the steps you need to take? I've got you.

After spending the last decade designing, building & launching a variety of apps from scratch, I've learned a lot about what it takes to make a great app. For those who've never worked in tech, it can be an overwhelming process, but it doesn't have to be. I've packed everything I've learned into this workshop so you can finally start & make progress on that amazing idea you've been thinking about.

In this immersive, one-day workshop, you will learn the process for making apps, from idea to launch. By the end, you'll be armed with the process, terminology, & tools necessary to take the idea from your head to start building the first version of a web or mobile app.

This workshop will:

+ Help you scope & plan the core features of your app.
+ Help you visualize your idea from pen & paper to digital mockups.
+ Explain key terms & technologies as it relates to making apps.
+ Explain the available tools, coding languages or people that you can use to build your idea with or without code.
+ Show you the steps for launching on the web or the app store.

By the end of this workshop you will have:

+ Defined your app's core features.
+ Created user flow diagrams that illustrate how a user would progress through your app.
+ Started visualizing your app through sketches & digital mockups.
+ Gained an understanding of what options you have to build your app with or without code.
+ Become familiar with the process for launching on the web or in the app store.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
----

Hi! I'm Kim. I'm an award-winning product designer, full stack developer, & chronic creator originally from Kingston, Jamaica.

Over the last decade I've designed, built, & launched multiple web & mobile apps from scratch. I taught myself how to code & grew as a designer because I enjoyed the end-to-end process of taking an idea from napkin to launch by myself.

I'm a maker first; everything else is second.

Before making the leap to start my own studio, I worked with top creative agencies & product consultancies, such as RGA, Ogilvy, & thoughtbot, helping startups & established businesses build their digital presence. Now under my venture studio, Bourn, I create stuff I want to exist, & help others do the same.

At the beginning of my journey, having a full time job & being new to code never stopped me from creating the things I wanted to create. What mattered was knowing my why & having a process. This helped me stick with it till the end.

Because of my work, I've spoken on the TEDx stage & at other events by Girlboss, AIGA & Girls who Code. My work has been featured in publications & podcasts such as CodeNewbie, Revision Path, & Giant Robots. I've served as a judge for The One Show, been a curator for NET Magazine & a front-end development teacher at General Assembly.

As your instructor, my goal is to not only teach you how to bring your idea to life, but to provide you with a framework for following through.

FAQs
----

Who is this workshop suited for?

+ People with an idea who don't know where to start.
+ People with a personal motivation for creating their app because this stuff ain't easy.
+ People who are ready to dedicate their nights & weekends to making their idea come to life. You've got to be ready to follow through.

Do I need to have an idea to work on?

Yes! And preferably one you care deeply about. We'll be working directly on your idea. If you don't have one you've been dying to create, you may not get the full value from this workshop.

Is this workshop applicable for any type of app?

Yes! This workshop is meant to set the foundation for any type of app. When it comes time to build your app, that's where things will start to diverge but we won't be building your app in the workshop. We will cover the terminology, technologies & platforms you can research to do so after the workshop.

That said, apps that include AR/VR, Mobile games, Algorithmic feeds, AI, Complex computations, data analysis or tracking are more complex. The information related to building or launching your app may not be applicable.

Will we get to build the app?

Building the app is the last step in the product creation process. There are so many other steps that are often overlooked & are crucial to making an app.We will be covering those initial steps during the workshop so you can be ready to build your app after the workshop.

Do I need to know how to code to attend?

Nope! This workshop is geared towards those who aren't technical, don't know how to code, or don't understand the end-to-end process of making an app. The goal is that by the end, you'll have more technical knowledge than you came in with. You'll be able to decide if you want to use no-code tools, learn to code or hire someone to do it for you.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Yes. In order to make the best use of our short time together, I'll ask you to prepare a few items beforehand that will help set the foundation for what you'll learn & do during the workshop. This will include defining your why, the problem, the solution & who you set out to serve with this app.

You'll receive the details of this pre-work a few days before the workshop. It should take 1-3 hours to complete.

Do I need to bring anything?

You'll need a laptop, notebook or notepad & a pen or pencil. There will be a few exercises to complete during the workshop.

How many spots are available?

Only 12 spots are available! This will allow me to have one-on-one time with each of you & answer questions specifically related to your idea.
