Data @ Global Giving
Speaker: Nick Hamlin, Data Scientist, Global Giving
A lot has happened since GlobalGiving was last featured at a Data for the Greater Good event about a year ago! In this return visit, Nick Hamlin will describe what it's been like to do social sector data world during a pandemic: what's had to change, how problems & systems have needed to evolve, & what challenges remain the same as ever. We'll also discuss some of the key components of GlobalGiving's work in 2020, some covid-related & others not, & how GlobalGiving has kept data at the heart of its operations & programs, even in a fully-remote world.
Bio:
Nick Hamlin lives to make social good data accessible, understandable, & actionable for everyone. As GlobalGivings first Data Scientist, Nick wears many hats, including leading the organizations data strategy, building & maintaining core infrastructure, & designing experiments to evaluate program impact. Hes also a Data Ambassador for Datakinds Impact Practice in community health, the developer of Pando, Root Changes platform for exploring networks in the social sector, & part of the team behind Aidsight, an app allowing non-technical users to easily explore international aid transparency data to unpack hidden relationships between organizations & validate data quality. Most recently, his writing appears in 97 Things about Ethics Everyone in Data Science Should Know (OReilly Publishing, 2020). In his past life, Nick worked as a reliability consulting engineer for Fortune 500 companies around the world & held NSF research positions in China & Thailand.
