EVENT DETAILS |
Technology & convenience are driving down the use of cash. Real-time payments, pervasive smartphones, the leapfrog of mobile commerce (in emerging markets), pervasive payments infrastructure (in mature markets), & fintech players are powering this shift.
The benefits of cashless are touted: operating efficiencies, better experience & more inclusive consumer access, stronger governance. But do these promises mask risks? Challenges include enabling access by the 1.7 billion people worldwide who lack accounts with a financial institution or mobile money provider* & fully depend on the cash economy; the desire for privacy (intrinsic to cash; possible with cryptos); & the vulnerability of digital systems (think the recent Visa shutdown).
We will focus on the human side of cashless society through the lenses of access, privacy, & risk to identify the conflicts & models of collaboration across payments/financial services, governments & the society they serve. *Source: World Bank The Global Findex Database 2017) & UBS
