TikTok, RedNote & DeepSeek are getting big interest despite America's anti-China tech stance. We chat w/ Ivy Yang about what this all means.
A month into 2025 & the most talked about apps in the United States are TikTok, RedNote & DeepSeek. Considering America's aggressive anti-China tech actions, how did these companies enter the limelight? What are they saying or not saying about themselves? And is this surge of domestic interest a foreshadowing of global relations to come?
We dive into the matter with Ivy Yang, founder of global PR consulting company Wavelet Strategy. Ivy Yang is a strategic PR consulting expert for companies in the global marketplace, with experience in international comms & PR roles, including for Alibaba in New York. She is a FT Chinese columnist & the author of the Calling the Shots newsletter, which aims to bridge communications between China & the U.S.

Why are we charging?
YCW is a volunteer-run initiative depending on the grace of the venues we work with to host our events. Recently, all our free events have had completely wild attrition rates ranging from 30% to nearly 80% no shows. This makes it extremely hard for us to both give venues the heads up as to how much space we need, & to know how many volunteers we need to staff them.
We DON'T want to earn money from you, & so the ticket will get you something commensurate in value. But we would like to nudge you to come if you sign up.
ARE YOU A STUDENT? Email us at newyork@youngchinawatchers.com from your valid .edu email & we will give you a code for a free ticket.
