NYC IDEAS presents "What's the Big Deal with Postgres"
Welcome to New York City Institute for Data, Engineering, Architecture, & Standards (IDEAS). We're a group that meets periodically to discuss technical topics in data, software engineering, & related fields.
The Event:
Join us on September 25th for a deep dive into all things Postgres! This open-source RDBMS has been a cornerstone for decades, but recent acquisitions of Postgres-focused startups (Neon, Crunchy) have propelled it into the spotlight.
At this event, we'll explore: What is Postgres? Why is it currently so popular? What innovative applications are people building with it? We're inviting practitioners & builders to share their experiences & demonstrate how Postgres & compatible technologies can be essential to your next-generation data architectures.
This is a free event. Food & beverages will be provided.
Your Speakers:
1) Artem Ervits - Principal Solutions Engineer @ Snowflake
Introduction to Postgres
2) Nate Stewart - CEO @ Materialize
Building data-intensive UIs from Postgres CDC
3) Michael Goddard- Principal Solution Architect @ CedarDB
Imagine being in a position to build a database system from a clean slate, wiping away 30+ years of unchallenged assumptions. What would that look like? In this session, the CedarDB team will provide a high level overview of how they answered this question, based on eight years of research at Technical University of Munich (TUM). The talk will focus on, among other things:
- Why be Postgres compatible, & what does that even mean?
- What is the user & operator experience?
- Demo: How does the performance of CedarDB compare with that of Postgres?
- Roadmap for 2025 & beyond
- How to easily get started with CedarDB
4) Chris Casano - Senior Director, Customer Engineering @ Cockroach Labs
CockroachDB, a reimagined SQL database for zero downtime workloads. Feels like Postgres, scales like NoSQL & powering AI in a variety of ways. Learn about the expected performance, use cases & how it integrates into your stack.
Timeline:
5:30: Doors open. Eat/Drink/Network.
6:00: Speakers Begin
8:00: Drink/Network
9:00: You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
We're grateful to Materialize for letting us use their space for this event.
