About This Think Tank
"It has taken decades for New York State's economy to rebound from the effects of offshoring & globalization. From Buffalo & Rochester to Binghamton & Riverhead, the state has shed hundreds of thousands of jobs-particularly in manufacturing & related industrial sectors-and upstate job growth has been comparatively slow. Yet in the years ahead, New York State will need to contend with an even more powerful & fast-moving economic force:automation." -- Matt A.V. Chaban (Center for an Urban Future)
By now, we've all read the media headlines & heard the alarms being sounded from experts, business leaders & politicians: the robots are coming and, as a result, millions of jobs may be deleted from the economy in a disturbingly short time span -- including white collar jobs like accountants, investment bankers & lawyers which have traditionally been safe from workforce volatility.
The numbers vary greatly from one research report to another, but they all project the number of jobs that will be replaced by automation in the next decade to be in millions to tens of millions. Researchby McKinseyestimates that73 millionU.S. jobs could be lost to automation by the year 2030. Having said that, research also indicates that millions of new jobs (and entire new job categories) will be created as a result of automation (exactly what these new jobs will be remains a mystery).
It's all pretty daunting & confusing for most people to grasp -- even experts, business leaders, & government officials are struggling to define exactly how automation will impact society, communities & families, & what we should do about it now. And while the plethora of research on automation & the future of work is informative & necessary, their dire predictions of mass unemployment in the near future paints an ominous picture that stokes our deepest fears about human beings replaced by machines.
JOIN USfor this specialMission AIdiscussion & live research analysis where we will explore how automation will impact the workforce & small businesses in New York in the near future, & how the local & federal governments should help businesses & citizens prepare for this seismic shift. The overarching question of the evening is: Where do we go from here & how do we get there?
According to compelling new research by The Center for an Urban Future (State of Work: The Coming Impact of Automation on New York), New York workers could see $185 billion in wages taken by machines, robots & automation in the next few years:"Our study finds that New York State is less susceptible to automation than the nation as a whole. But it also reveals that more than 1.2 million jobs in the state, about 12 percent of the state's workforce, could be largely automated using technology that exists today."
The report offers a detailed assessment of the "automation potential of every occupation statewide & in each of New York's ten regions." Reviewing the above research by Center for an Uban Future & other research (including Burning Glass research on the job market), we'll explore how New York City specifically (as opposed to other parts of the state) will be reshaped by automation & where the new opportunities for job growth & entrepreneurship will arise.
In addition to the interactive panel & think tank session with our expert guest speakers, we will be gathering live research at this event (asking for your feedback on various aspects of this topic to share publicly). Lite bites & beverages included.
