Some analysts warn of a coming productivity shock, where AI-driven efficiencies lead to widespread job displacement & cascading disruption across industries. Others point to a longer pattern of creative destruction, where technological change ultimately creates new kinds of work. Still others reference "the singularity" & claim AI is a fundamentally different kind of technology that doesn't obey historical patterns.
In this session, we'll explore these apparently competing perspectives on AI & economic disruption. Drawing on ideas from diverse fields, we'll look at the assumptions behind each view before moving into a more open, structured conversation.
