How do you change human behavior to make real change in the fight against climate change?

The NYU x Make the Planet Great Again Hackathon is a unique opportunity for students to help shape solutions to the most pressing challenge facing humanity - climate change.
Every year, Make the Planet Great Again picks a widely regarded issue concerning our environment & puts it at the center of a full blown 2 day hackathon event.
You will be working side by side with fellow students across all disciplines as well as experts, entrepreneurs, activists & enthusiasts on innovative new concepts, presenting prototypes & laying the foundation for your own pro-planet project.
This year, Make the Planet Great Again has supported & collaborated with more than 35 companies, environmental organizations & initiatives identifying one common problem - how do you change human behavior?
How can we change human behavior?
No matter how good the product or how innovative the idea - if you fail to influence people to adopt it, the change you seek to make cannot scale effectively. Fundamentally, climate change is driven by human behavior, it is only with the shifting of our behavior patterns that true change can be achieved. We are working together with Make The Planet Great Again to work on new ways to address this issue.
How does this work?
2 days of action - Using different co-creation methods you will learn to explore problems & solutions from different angles, work together with your team & pitch your results to win a private mentorship session with our community of experts & advisors.
30 NYU students - As an NYU student, you have the unique opportunity to join a global consortium of experts & shape the solutions of tomorrow.
2 MTPGA projects - Two projects from the Make The Planet Great Again community will give you insights on their personal journey & work together with you on creating new solutions tackling human behavior change specific to their case or on influencing human behavior change within your local community.
Expert juror panel - While this hackathon does have a judging component at the end, its less of a competition & more of a collaborative effort to work towards change. Teams will be presenting their prototypes at the end of the hackathon to a panel of jurors. Winners will be selected, presented & celebrated. The jurors will choose one team to be given access to mentorship & guidance from members of the MTPGA team to continue their prototypes.

Once you register for your ticket, you will be asked to write a statement of interest answering the following questions:
Why do you want to participate in this climate change hackathon?
What habit or behavior do you plan to change in your own life to help combat climate change & decrease your daily footprint?
Who are the Jurors?
Rosedel Davies-Adewebi - VP, Innovation Lead at Morgan Stanley
Rosedel is an experienced innovator & a passionate social activist, being responsible for Innovation at Morgan Stanley & previously at the United Nations Global Compact. She has mentored social entrepreneurs & changemakers around the world.
Micah Kotch - Managing Director at URBAN-X
Micah is an outcome oriented leader with broad experience in design, urbantech, mobility, & clean energy. He is a nationally recognised thought leader with deep relationships across multiple mobility, urbantech & energy-related sectors.
Nate Pinsley - Managing Director at A/D/O by Mini
Nate is managing director at one of the most innovative & vibrant creative spaces in New York - A/D/O. Nate speaks & writes on the intersection of culture, commerce & innovation & has built several mission-driven organizations. As a passion project, Nate runs a small hotel in the historic LGBT community of Fire Island, NY.
Odile Beniflah - Head of International at Meetup
Odile is a purpose driven leader with over 10 years of experience rolling out peer-to-peer marketplaces to regional markets. Her strong entrepreneurial drive with her unique passion for building community & leveraging diversity has made her an integral part of the success story of Meetup.
Peter Schwarzenbauer - Member of the Board at BMW Group
Peter is a global leader who has driven innovation across multiple industries, mentored social entrepreneurs & co-founded Make the Planet Great Again. He is also a member of the executive board of BMW Group.
Anne-Laure Fayard - Associate Professor of Innovation, Design & Organizational Studies at NYU Tandon School of Engineering
Anne-Laure is an expert in socio-material practices, organizational communication, organizational culture, space, design & cross-disciplinary collaboration. Teaching at some of the most prestigious universities world wide, she has gained unique insight about the value of community & culture, specifically in regards to business.
Hackathon Schedule: November 16 & 17th 2019 (*full schedule to be released soon)
DAY 1
Kickoff & Introductions - Peter Schwarzenbauer, the MTPGA team & two of our projects will introduce themselves & explain the goals & methods of this hackathon.
Pick your Team! - Teams are formed & prepped to get going.
Dream - Teams will carry out several different exercises to brainstorm concrete goals, identify possible roadblocks & cluster opportunities.
Focus - Smaller groups within the teams will gather & ideate as well as plan methods of implementation to then present to their team.
Network! - In celebration of the first day, teams will share drinks & pizza to get to know each other & get ready for day 2.
DAY 2
Kickoff & Inspiration - The MTPGA team will summarize the first day & a second community project will share insight on their journey.
Plan - The teams create a roadmap & come up with a plan of execution of their solution.
DO! -The teams prepare a presentation & pitch their solution to the jury in five minute sessions.
Award Ceremony - Winners are selected, presented & celebrated.
Closing - Hackathon wrap up including reflection & summary of findings to conclude Students for Make The Planet Great Again 2019.
