Talk #1: Don't Re-org Away Your Resilience (Dan Slimmon)
Platform Engineering teams are often formed by repurposing an infrastructure team, or an ops team, or an SRE team. This makes a certain kind of sense, since these teams' responsibilities tend to overlap. But there is a critical mismatch in responsibilities that's easy to miss: somebody's still gotta own the diffuse bugs.
Diffuse bugs are bugs that show up not as defects in a particular software system, but only as anomalies in the interactions among those systems, their operators, & customer traffic. Since their symptoms are spread across multiple ownership domains, diffuse bugs can only be identified (much less understood) by somebody who is looking for them. This talk will explore the importance of diffuse bug ownership to resilience. We'll conclude with some practical methods of ensuring that diffuse bugs don't fall through the cracks in your org chart.
Speaker Bio
Dan Slimmon is an SRE with 16 years of experience at scale (recently: HashiCorp, Etsy). He's run hundreds of software incidents & his 3-part video course, Leading Incidents, was recently released on June 12.
Talk #2: TBD
