SEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

Jane's Carousel was built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. This beautifully restored ride is located in Brooklyn Bridge Park & is open year-round.

Jane Walentas is responsible for the 25 year restoration of the magnificent, hand carved 1920's carousel known as Jane's Carousel. Situated in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the carousel is nestled between the Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridges in an exciting pavilion designed by the acclaimed architect Jean Nouvel. Donated to NYC by Jane & her husband David in 2011, the carousel operates under Jane's direction as a non profit.

Jane worked in her DUMBO studio to restore the 48 carousel horses to their original glory herself, working first only with a carpenter & later, a team of artists to bring the carousel to life. She worked on & oversaw every detail of the restored carousel.

The carousel now stands as a treasured landmark in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Jane is also the Executive Director of the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, which awards rent-free non living studio space to 17 visual artists for year long residencies in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Developed for artists, by artists in 1991, the Walentas' took over the program with new sponsorship & commitment from the Walentas Family Foundation, continuing the legacy of founder Marie Walsh Sharpe.

Jane worked for many years as an Art Director in Advertising Design, with numerous design positions on major consumer brands. She worked mostly in the cosmetic industry for Elizabeth Arden, Avon & for many years at Estee Lauder. She moved to New York after working for an Advertising Agency, Testa Publicita, in Torino, Italy. Originally from Teaneck, N.J., Jane graduated from Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia in 1966 with a BFA in Advertising Design & received an MFA in Printmaking from NYU in 1985.

For years, Jane participated with her husband David & their son Jed in pioneering the development of the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Jane serves on the Board of Directors of Moore College of Art where she has established 10 fully endowed 4 year Visionary Woman Scholarships, an endowed Scholarship & International Travel Fellowship in addition to an endowed Faculty Chair.

She also sits on the Board of FAPE (Foundation for Arts & Preservation in our Embassies).

Jane lives, works & plays in DUMBO with her husband David.
