EVENT DETAILS
According to the United Nations Economic Commission, the average consumer today purchases 60% more clothing than 20 years ago. Each garment is kept half as long, & about 40% of the clothing in wardrobes in developed countries are never worn.

We have become so accustomed to fast fashion that it's common for cheap clothes to be viewed as a disposable commodity. The majority of a garment's life cycle lies in consumers' hands, which means we can have an impact on ensuring our clothing doesn't end up in landfills. Our panelists will discuss why the trend of short clothing life cycles hasn't subsided & steps we can all take to be intentional about the clothes we wear.

PANELISTS BIOS
As one of the first plus size models in the 1980's, Catherine became acutely aware of the need for diversity in the fashion industry. Told she was too large to model at 170 pounds & 5'10, it was suggested that she would need to get to a size 4 & 120 pounds to ever be considered model material. She became a member of a four person comedy squad called The Nerve! confronting the 80's yuppified corporate America with its efforts to brainwash the populace into a conformist mentality & strip us of our individuality & unique-ness. Her size diversity platform was fueled early on in those days & when she was asked to become a plus size model. Once she saw the need for real women to practice self-love & appreciation, she never stopped championing the underdog.

Her inclusive viewpoint enabled her to add more skillsets into her role as a model/spokesperson. She became a motivational speaker, an author, an actress, a writer & magazine editor when she was part of the dream team for MODE Magazine, the first Vogue-executed plus magazine that showed the full figured woman as a fashion icon in her own right. She became an image consultant & toured the United States become the missing retail link with her programs called Shape Shopping with Figure&Fit & Model Maker Mentors, helping to revamp the notion that women of a certain size couldn't be stylish. She connected with the notion of myth busting in every sense & became Image & Style Director of Divabetic, a charity for women living with diabetes in her attempt to educate & impart a diva-tude about one's health management.

Never one to accept the status quo, she created an event production division called Runway the Real Way: Fashion Diversity on the Inclusive Catwalk. She has become passionate about sustainability & is a member of the NYC Fair Trade Coalition & a featured member of Fashion Mingle. She created an event production company with Pamela Privette of PL Enterprises calling it hiTechMODA: Innovation fostering Opportunity. In their second season, they are poised to do the first sustainable show ever with National Geographic in September 2019 in New York City during NYFW. She teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she recently co-produced Business of Curves: Fashion's Future for FIT's Dean's Forum with a view toward having design students be able to take a certificate program or minor in plus size fashion design. She recently curated & coordinated models & designers for DAFT BRUNCH with Common Objective & Global Fashion Exchange, orchestrating the largest clothing swap attracting 1400 people & collecting 5,000 pounds of clothing rescued from landfills.
