Making Tech Development Civic: Lessons from Amazon HQ2
Join Forums @ Civic Hall & The City for a conversation debriefing the Amazon HQ2 deal. This event features diverse perspectives from tech, labor, community organizing, & media, aiming to identify lessons learned & areas where collective action can improve technology sector development practices in New York.
There are many questions to explore in the wake of Amazon awarding & then retracting its HQ2 expansion project in New York:
What made the Amazon HQ2 deal possible in New York?
What structural elements are in place that limit transparency into deal-making practices?
What are best principles & practices to do community-centered tech development in New York?
What did New York gain & lose from the Amazon HQ2 process?
What can we do the next time a major tech development project comes along to ensure New York families, communities, & businesses benefit?
What are some development projects happening right now?
The evening will start with getting a brief overview of the timeline & players in the deal from Alyssa Katz, deputy editor of The City. Each discussant will then be able to discuss their perspective on the matter, before moderated conversation & audience Q&A. Discussants include:
Deborah Axt, Make the Road
Michelle de la Uz, Fifth Avenue Committee
Alison Hirsh, 32BJ
Julie Samuels, TechNYC
This event is put together by Forums @ Civic Hall in partnership with The City, a new local news start-up dedicated to hard-hitting reporting that serves the people of New York. Check out TheCity.NYC for excellent local coverage.
